John Pilger: Partner in Terrorism

In an outrageous piece of terrorist propaganda appearing on the cover of today's New Statesman, John Pilger puts the blame for the 7/7 London attacks not on the terrorists, but rather on Tony Blair:

Cancer in the Body Islam

Islam was once a healthy thing. Within its ideological borders, whose limits were broader than its Christian competitors at the time, it flourished. Knowledge was preserved within Islam and expanded too. Empires rose and fell within Islam. Empires of great wealth and power and breadth.

But a sickness grew within Islam. It now threatens to choke the entire enterprise. It started, perhaps, as a reaction to the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the sick man of Europe, during WWI. Or maybe it started hundreds of years before with the Reconquista in 1492. Some say it began in Vienna on September 11, 1683.

This sickness, whenever it began, became a cancer, the terror, which now threatens the entire body of Islam. The sickness became malignant with Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood and the writings of Sayed Qutb, drawing on Salafism/Wahaabism before that.

The United States has a reasonably good history fighting similar cancers, these ideologies gone mad, which infect and take over the internal machinery of national bodies. Nazism, Fascism, and Communism have all been cured, excised, due to a large degree to the painful efforts, patience, and foresight of the US.

Without the West fully realizing it, Saudi Arabia provided the angiogenesis, the supply line for this cancer without which it would have lain dormant. Wahaabist schools and thought were propagated throughout the Islamic world, and in the West as well.

Then the cancer which had taken hold within parts of Islam metastasized with the founding of Al Qaeda, the propaganda of Osama bin Laden, and their biggest spectacle. This was 9/11. The cancer began to grow everywhere within Islam.

This cancer, fed by its Saudi blood supply, began in the Saudi peninsula and in Egypt, and grew to include the mullahs of Pakistan, the immigrants of Europe, and of course the "freedom-fighters" of Palestine. From there it metastasized to include Indonesia, the Philippines, the US, Russia, Turkey, Morocco, Algeria, India and any number of places.

Now, this political cancer rots away the body politic wherever Muslims and conflict coexist. Terrorism and Islam are becoming synonymous. At this point it's too late even for the Saudis to stop it.

The Bush Doctrine suggests that a harsh program of radiation treatment can save the Islamic world. That by democratizing Afghanistan and Iraq, the Islamic body can be saved. Anybody with any humanity hopes that this can work. For what is the alternative?

After the absolute horrors of Beslan, we can see that the cancer, left untreated, will only get worse, and the non-Muslim victims who don't fit into my analogy will increase in number. Killing the patient remains the option of last resort- to put Islam out of our collective misery. It's in every healthy Muslim's interest to see that that chemotherapy, as painful as it is, succeeds.

No apologies to Susan Sontag. There's a cancer running loose in Islam. It must be stopped. It will cost a lot to cure. It will cost a lot more to euthanize the patient.

Western media is the cancer

Islam is not an ideology, nor is it an enterprise. Islam is a religion & is currently the largest growing faith in the world. Question yourself for a moment why? Currently in the west, a slanted media has controlled the minds of unquestioning followers & is eating away at the minds of the majority. While your analogy is interesting, it has nothing to do with Islam neither from a religious viewpoint nor a historical one. I recommend that everyone who takes it upon himself to lash out against something, (whatever it may be) make the effort of doing some independent research & break loose from the shackles of a manipulating media.
